Kent Wedding Awards: From ‘no way!’ to award-winning photographer
Quick synopsis: In this blog, I talk about facing my fears, stepping out of my comfort zone… and entering (and winning!) the Kent Wedding Awards. Keep reading to hear my story.
If you had told me a year ago that I’d be here, sharing the news that I’ve won an award, I probably would have laughed. But somehow, here I am—still letting it all sink in.
I entered the Kent Wedding Awards for Best Newcomer 2025, made it to the finals, and then, in the most surreal moment... won. Even as I write this, it still feels like a dream. Did this Sittingbourne wedding photographer really just become an award winner? Oh, and that same wedding photographer is…me!
I’m sharing my story today to inspire anyone who has ever doubted themselves—because if I can do it, so can you.
It all started with a (big!) step out of my comfort zone
Have you ever been told that you’re shy? Way before I became a photographer, I was labelled shy. And you know what? That’s okay. I’m the quiet, introverted one—someone happiest behind the scenes, observing from a distance, and letting others take the lead.
Being the one “in focus” was never something I craved. That was for my clients, after all! But as my wedding photography business in Kent grew, I realised that stepping into the spotlight—even just a little—wasn’t about seeking attention. It was about showing up for myself and embracing new opportunities.
I never imagined myself at the centre of it all, pushing boundaries, stepping out of my comfort zone, or—let’s be honest—winning an award. But life has a way of showing us that change is possible and that sometimes, the smallest steps outside that feel uncomfortable lead to the biggest transformations.
Starting my wedding photography business? One of the scariest things I’ve ever done!
Growing up in Kent, I have spent my whole life surrounded by natural beauty. They don’t call it the Garden Of England for nothing. So, when I first picked up a camera, photography felt easy. There was so much around me to capture.
But turning this passion into a career felt scary! And putting myself out there, showing my work to the world—felt even more terrifying. The Kent wedding photography industry is overflowing with talent, and imposter syndrome hit me hard.
What if no one liked my work? What if I failed? What if I wasn’t good enough?
Owning my talent and becoming a Kent wedding photographer!
Before I photographed my first wedding, I spent hours practising at home—styling and capturing bridal flatlays, experimenting with lighting and figuring out how to make even the smallest details look magical. Those small steps helped me build confidence before I ever stepped behind the camera at a real wedding.
Little by little, I started taking on weddings, sharing my work, and connecting with fellow creatives. Every time I did something that scared me, I learned, I improved, and I gained confidence. Look below, and you'll see some of the first flatlays I created during those early days of practice.
Entering the Kent Wedding Awards? No way can I do that!
When Laura from Versa Style by Laura, suggested the award, my initial reaction was no. That’s not for me.
But then, something shifted. Conversations with supportive friends and fellow creatives encouraged me to take the plunge. Entering the awards wasn’t just about winning—it was about believing in myself enough to even try. So, I submitted my application, expecting nothing but the experience of putting myself forward.
Weeks later, I received an email. This ‘newbie’ Kent wedding photographer had made it to the finals. That alone felt surreal. I was honoured just to be standing among such incredible talent. I told myself that no matter what happened next, I was proud to have got this far.
Then came the awards night. I sat nervously, heart pounding, surrounded by talented, inspiring people. When they announced the winner of Best Newcomer, I was prepared to clap for someone else. But then…
They called my name.
For a few seconds, I didn’t move. My hands shook. My mind raced. Did they really just say my name?
Walking up to that stage felt like an out-of-body experience. As I held that award in my hands, I realised something profound—this wasn’t just about winning. It was about every moment of doubt I had pushed through, every late night spent editing, every ounce of courage it took to put myself out there.
The people who made this possible
Winning this award was an emotional experience, and I know I wouldn’t be here without the amazing people who have supported me along the way. My mum, my rock and biggest cheerleader, has stood by me through every high and low, always believing in me—even when I struggled to believe in myself. I’m endlessly grateful for her love and encouragement.
A huge thank you to Laura from Versa Style by Laura, who not only encouraged me to enter but also worked her magic, making my hair look amazing and helping me feel my best. And to Rebecca from Rebecca Tolton Makeup—your incredible talent made me feel beautiful and confident on such a special night. You both helped this introverted photographer feel like she could take on the world, and I couldn’t be more grateful.
This is just the beginning for this Sittingbourne wedding photographer…
I can’t wait to see where this journey takes me. What I’ve learned from all of this is that growth happens when we embrace change—even when it’s uncomfortable. I’m still the same quiet, introspective person, but I’ve learned that stepping out of your comfort zone doesn’t require you to change who you are—it simply opens up the chance to grow into something new.
To everyone who entered, made it to the finals, or received a commendation, congratulations! The talent in this industry is absolutely incredible, and I’m so proud to be part of this community of passionate, creative individuals.
Thank you to everyone who has supported me and believed in my work—whether you’re a couple, a fellow photographer, or someone cheering me on from the sidelines. Your kindness and encouragement mean everything to me.
If you’re reading this and thinking, “I could never do something like that,” I want you to know that you can – that’s whether you’re a fellow incredible Kent wedding photographer, makeup artist, hair stylist, bridal dress designer, venue host…whoever you are! If a shy introvert like me can push through those feelings of doubt and take those steps forward, so can you. Growth takes time–and plenty of discomfort. But I can already say: it’s so worth it.
Here’s to the next chapter—embracing change, continuing to grow, and journeying together. Thank you for being a part of this incredible experience.
